Peer Leadership is a counseling program
for girls in grades 2-10. This program serves three
groups of girls and young women. The youngest group is made
up of girls in grades 2 & 3, the middle group grade
5, and the oldest group grades 8-10. The program is designed
to build self esteem, support critical thinking skills,
and promote good decision making.
The girls meet in small and large groups,
plan activities for their weekly meetings as well as special
events such as field trips, and focus on making their group
a true support group. Each group makes a list of rules to
which everyone agrees to adhere. Discussion topics and activities
for the younger group include accepting consequences for
one's actions, getting in touch with their feelings without
fearing ridicule from peers, anger management, learning
to play games in Spanish to understand how frustrated their
Spanish-speaking peers feel every day, and the basic premise
that everyone is born good.
The middle and older groups deal with the
above-mentioned topics, as well as issues about respect,
their bodies, human sexuality, Aids prevention and education,
trust building, financial matters, budgeting, careers and
general life directions, and relationships. |
